5 REASONS I LOVE CANGGU
Truth be told, Canggu has changed a lot in recent years. It used to be an escape into the wilderness through flowing rice fields and swaying coconut groves to some almost well-kept secret world-class surf breaks. Times have changed though and rapid development has well and truly moved in to the area, but it’s still one of my favourite places in Bali. Here are five of my top reasons why:
1. Canggu is the real deal!
Despite the flood of villas and hotels Canggu has a unique way of perfectly balancing Balinese village life with hipster hangouts. There are still rice fields, beach temples and colourful ceremonies but now you can enjoy them from unique boutique-style establishments serving everything from Burgers to Betutu.
2. Stunning sunsets!
Like every day! It doesn’t matter if you’re on the beach, toes in the sand drinking fresh young coconut, treating yourself to a fresh seafood BBQ at Echo Beach or soaking up the rays from your surfboard, sunsets from Canggu are awesome! There are lots of places to check out from Berawa (just north of Seminyak) to Cemagi (just south of Tanah Lot) and that includes Batu Bolong, world famous Echo Beach Club, Nelayan, Pererenan, Selasih, Seseh and Mengening. Try them all and then find some more!
3. The Food!
If you love to eat you’ll love Canggu! There are so many restaurants, cafes and warungs that it’s not possible to keep up with them all, but these are at the top of my list. At least they are today …
Deus Cafe
Jalan Batu Mejan No.8, Canggu (just follow the road down to Tugu and turn off to Echo beach, it’s on the right.)
It’s a Café … it’s a bar … it’s a restaurant! Oh, and it’s a bike shed! Very cool place to hang out!
Old Man’s
Jalan Batu Bolong Beach, Canggu (just follow the road all the way to Tugu.)
It’s a beachfront beer garden with great food and a great atmosphere.
Crate Cafe
Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong No. 60, Canggu (another popular place on the road to Tugu).
One of the best healthy breakfasts to start any busy day in paradise. Go there! Tomorrow morning!
Echo Beach Club
Jalan Pura Batu Mejan, Canggu (just follow the signs. All roads lead to Echo Beach!)
It’s the original bar, restaurant and cool chill out spot in Canggu. It’s so famous the beach is named after it! Great menu, fresh seafood, cold drinks and awesome people. You can’t go to Canggu and not pop in to Echo Beach!
4. Surf spots
Canggu boasts some of the most consistent world-class surf breaks anywhere on the planet. And naturally, it’s a popular place to be and be seen.
5. The People
This is the real beauty of Bali, the people and Canggu doesn’t disappoint. With so much going on it’s a great place to meet people from all over the world. The locals are pretty cool too!
